COLUMBIA BOROUGH WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

The Borough of Columbia built its first wastewater treatment facility in 1952. The first plant was a primary facility which removed only the solids from the waste stream and disinfected the effluent.

The facility was updated in 1972 with secondary treatment to remove phosphorus from the wastestream. Since that time we have been innovative in acquiring new technology to protect our environment.

The Borough of Columbia Wastewater Department is steadfast in insuring we protect our environment by providing the best possible treatment of its wastewater. The Wastewater Department employs seven people for this task. These people are on the job 7 days a week, 365 days a year insuring that we meet the stringent requirements set by the government on the discharge from our treatment facility. The citizen's of Columbia can help us in the quest of meeting these requirements by not dumping chemicals, oils or grease down the drains. Lancaster County Solid Waste management Authority has an excellent program that disposes of these wastes at no charge to residents of Lancaster County. For information their web address is www.lcswma.org or phone 717-397-9968.

Please protect our waterways as we all live downstream!
